COMMON GROUND
IN DEVELOPMENT
Two creative developments of Common Ground took place between November 2021 and March 2022, supported by Fremantle Arts Centre and funded by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport Western Australia.
Common Ground is an interdisciplinary performance work with an ensemble of performers playing with text and movement alongside AV and soundscape. The AV and soundscape will create a sense of the sublime nature of landscape, being larger than oneself and something that transcends the human. Movement and body poetry will be used to create the visceral interface between land and person. Text will be used to zoom in on the personal and connect with audiences through our shared experience living on this land. This project has a strong focus on intercultural collaboration, working with a range of performers that have unique and complex relationships to Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar. The way in which we walk and interact with the land is dependent on where and how we grew up, and the culture we live amongst. Due to the importance of individual storytelling in this work, intercultural collaboration is essential so that a variety of voices are centered. During the project, the ensemble will research and develop their individual connections to this land as well as the common ground shared between them within the theme of connection to landscape. This work also aims to highlight the different backgrounds and identities of the people who share this country; unpacking and examining complex relationships between the multicultural populace, and how despite this we are all impacted by the expansive landscape we stand on together.
